Scholarship Details

The Allan and Nesta Ferguson Foundation annually offers scholarships to African nationals and residents to pursue master’s programs at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

For the 2025/26 academic year, two scholarships are available for African students who wish to enroll in a taught master’s program at SOAS.

These scholarships are awarded based on academic merit. Recipients must take up the scholarship in the 2025/26 academic year as deferrals are not permitted.


Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the SOAS London Allan and Nesta Ferguson Scholarships, applicants must:

  1. Be residents of low-income or lower-middle-income countries (as defined by the World Bank) and preferably from low-income households.
  2. Hold an undergraduate degree with a first-class qualification.
  3. Apply for a program at SOAS before the scholarship deadline. While an offer of admission is not required at the time of applying for the scholarship, applicants must secure admission before the scholarship panel convenes.
  4. Meet the English language requirements of their admission offer as soon as possible.
  5. Note that this scholarship does not cover pre-sessional courses and does not provide funding for them.

Scholarship Value and Benefits

Each scholarship is valued at ÂŁ32,500, which will be applied toward tuition fees. If tuition fees are less than this amount, the remaining funds will be provided as a stipend to support living expenses.

The scholarships are awarded strictly based on academic merit.


Selection Process

An Advisory Panel consisting of three academic members will evaluate candidates based on the following:

  • Academic qualifications and degree results.
  • Academic references.
  • Personal statement and other relevant information.

Application Process

Interested candidates should follow these steps:

  1. Apply for a Program: Submit a completed online application for admission to SOAS.
    • It is advisable to apply for the program at least six weeks before the scholarship deadline to ensure you receive an offer of admission in time.
  2. Apply for the Scholarship: Complete and submit the scholarship application form by 12:00 pm (midday UK time) on February 7, 2025.

Note: Applications for admission can take up to four weeks to process. During peak periods, this may extend to six weeks. Late or incomplete scholarship applications will not be considered.

  • Notification of Results: Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by April 2025, with unsuccessful applicants notified once all scholarships have been allocated.
