Study in Japan for Free: 2026 MEXT Scholarship for Rwandan Students



The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan is offering fully funded undergraduate scholarships to Rwandan students who wish to study at Japanese national universities.

🎓 What is the MEXT Scholarship?

This scholarship covers:

·       📚 Full tuition

·       💰 Monthly allowance (117,000 yen)

·       ✈️ Round-trip airfare

·       🏫 One-year preparatory Japanese language education (if needed)

📌 Who Can Apply?

To be eligible:

·       You must be a Rwandan citizen with diplomatic ties to Japan.

·       Be born on or after April 2, 2001.

·       Must have completed 12 years of school or will complete by March 2026.

·       Be in good health and willing to learn Japanese.

·       Be able to travel to Japan between April 1–7, 2026, or by the university’s start date if directly placed.

📚 Available Fields of Study:

Choose from the following fields:

Social Sciences and Humanities:

·       Law, Politics, Education, Sociology, Literature, History, Japanese Language

·       Economics, Business Administration

Natural Sciences:

·       Science: Math, Physics, Chemistry

·       Engineering: Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Environmental, etc.

·       Agriculture, Biology, Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing

You can list up to three preferred majors.

📖 How the Program Works:

1.     Preparatory Year in Japanese language and academic subjects (unless directly placed into a university).

2.     4- to 5-year Bachelor’s Degree depending on your field.

3.     Classes are mostly in Japanese, so language learning is mandatory.

📄 Required Documents:

·       Application form

·       Academic transcripts

·       Certificates of graduation or expected graduation

·       Recommendation letter from a teacher or school principal

·       Health certificate

·       (Optional) Language proficiency certificates (if available)

⚠️ All documents must be submitted in English or Japanese, or with a translation.

📝 Selection Process:

1.     First Screening at the Japanese Embassy in Kigali:

o   Document review

o   Written exams (Japanese, English, Math, Science)

o   Interview

2.     Second Screening by MEXT in Japan.

📢 Only applicants who pass both screenings will receive the scholarship.
